In Defense of the Disney Princesses

Something struck me recently and no I don’t mean in the physical way. Over the past few months I’ve noticed a number of articles on the web that all focus on how awful the Disney Princesses are and all of the terrible things that they teach girls. Now, I’m not here to bash someone’s opinion but to politely disagree and say what I have to say. In my mind I believe that the Disney Princesses teach young girls many valuable qualities, morals and lessons through their films and on the Broadway stage.
As I have stated a few times on here I was a child of the 90’s. Like most of you I grew up with the Disney Princesses and just Disney in general. The princesses were my favorite characters that I loved so much that I wanted to be them. As I mentioned in a few other posts there was even a point when I was about 5 or 6 that I actually wanted to be Belle at Disney World when I grew up-I showed up to career day in a full-out Belle costume I was that serious about it! When I watched the movies I never saw anything that I thought was wrong about how Disney presented these characters. I enjoyed watching the movies on a constant loop that drove my parents and well anyone around insane. These were positive, empowering female role models for me and many other young girls throughout childhood.
Now, I don’t have kids but from how my parents raised me and knowing what I want to instill in my future children I know that I want them to be honest, kind, loyal, generous etc. Those are all qualities that we want our kids to have in them and we see them in every single Disney princess. One might argue that they sit around and do nothing and show little girls that they need to change this or that to be loved and accepted by others most notably by guys. But, when you look at it these princesses are in a way indicative to the time periods in which the films are released-you can definitely see it in the earlier princesses to the more recent ones. While they to an extent represent their time they are also ahead of their time in ways of showing that there is good and evil in this world, by standing for themselves and going out to find a way to get what they want, Yes, it might not be exactly like what we would say today but Cinderella wanted to go to that ball and hey, she found a way to get there.
These are characters that are adored by millions of girls and they all emulate morals and traits that every parent wants to see in their child. We want our girls to kind, accepting, generous, patient and loyal. We want them to be courageous like Mulan, brave like Merida, curious like Aurora, adventurous like Pocahontas, assertive like Rapunzel, caring like Snow White, determined like Jasmine and to have the spirit of Ariel. We want them to follow their dreams whether it’s to become an entrepreneur like Tiana or to have a passion for books and learning like Belle. We want them to choose their path in life from what they do to who they marry-does this sound a bit familiar!?
These women show that to little girls from a very young age. Will they necessarily get it from the first time they watch the films at the age of three-probably not. But as they grow older watching these movies and experiencing life they can and will relate them to real-life lessons. I always remember understanding as I got a little older around the age of 5 that Belle not only fell in love with the Beast but she accepted him for who he was-she was accepting something that we all want to have in ourselves and see in our kids. Elsa and Anna from Frozen teach them that not every fairytale needs to have a prince save a princess and they live happily ever after but sometimes you just need your sister and that it’s okay to be different and to do whatever you want(girl power anyone)!
These are important lessons that the princesses teach kids that we have and currently can see live on Broadway. The actresses who originated these roles and the ones who have succeeded them have continued to spread the messages and lessons that the princesses represent to young girls in a way that only a live musical staging can do. Susan Egan brought the kindness, intelligence and gentleness of Belle to life in the 90’s and Sierra Boggess gave the mermaid her voice, spirit and determination in 2007. Currently, Courtney Reed is bringing the independence, integrity and compassion of Jasmine live eight-times a week over at the New Amsterdam Theater.

It is these lessons that we remember, there is a reason why each little girl has a favorite princess throughout their life, I loved Belle because like me she loved to read, she showed me from a very early age that intelligence is amazing and to accept others for who they are. Each princess taught me something from the importance of kindness in Cinderella to instilling that I can be independent like Jasmine. There’s a reason why girls latch on to these characters through adulthood and you see them buying tiaras, dolls, little mementos and the DVDs. It’s not just because the movies and the characters are near and dear to them but because they taught them something as well. While we all want to be happy and find that fairytale ending where we ride off with our prince on a magic carpet to live out a tale that is old as time we also want it for our girls whether it’s our present ones or like mine the hypothetically speaking. We want them to have the princess ending but mostly we want them to kind, independent, intelligent, generous etc.-all of the things and more that the Disney Princesses show young girls every single day when a mother presses play on the remote.

XOXO

2014 Tony Predictions

Hello my lovely readers! So one of my favorite nights of the year is tomorrow night- the Tony Awards!!! With Hugh Jackman hosting, many tight categories and with from what I’m hearing some spectacular performances it’s making me all giddy and excited just thinking about it! So here they are my 2014 Tony predictions! Please note that these are my views and opinions and do not reflect those of the Tony voters.

Best Play

Who will win: All the Way. With Michael Cranston at the helm, the Drama Desk award win, its popularity amongst the older crowd and it’s a definite favorite with the voters.

Who I think should win: Casa Valentina. A play that full on addresses a real and historical issue with the brilliance that is Harvey Fierstien as the writer and a spectacular company I feel that a win is well deserved.

Best Musical

Who will win: A Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder. While I definitely feel that Beautiful has a strong chance it all comes down to who wins what and I just have a feeling that Gentlemans is going to sweep a la Avenue Q, Book of Mormon and Kinky Boots style. It was smart, funny and just all around great entertainment.

Who I think should win: Gentlemans Guide (see above) or Aladdin. Aladdin was easily one of my favorite shows that I have ever seen. It was just beautiful and magical to watch. Now that might be the Disney kid in me coming out, but I do feel that it is worthy even with my soft spot for this production.

Best Book of a Musical

Who will win: Robert L. Freedman for A Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder. It was funny, inventive, fresh and the show is definitely the favorite of the season

Who I think should win: Robert L. Freedman for A Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder see above.

Best Original Score

Who will win: Any of them! This category has been an incredibly tight race with the prize going to anyone. I do feel that Broadway favorite Jason Robert Brown for Bridges of Madison County has a slight edge over the others but we’ll see tomorrow!

Who I think should win: Again any of them! I’m a massive Kitt and Yorkey, JRB and Disney fan so I would be thrilled to see any of the nominees take it.

Best Revival of a Play

Who will win: It seems like it is going to be a close one between Twelfth Night and The Glass Menagerie. Both are incredible in their own right but Twelfth Night might just sneak up and take it.

Who I think should win: The Glass Menagerie. One of the best plays that I have ever seen with a stunning set and captivating performances by the entire cast I really would love to see this show get the recognition that it deserves.

Best Revival of a Musical

Who will win: Hedwig and the Angry Inch. While Les Miserables was the favorite coming into awards season Hedwig has just exploded. It will be a major shock if it does not win.

Who I think should win: Hedwig see above.

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play

Who will win: Brian Cranston for All the Way. He is spectacular in the role and with the show being a favorite he is undoubtedly the favorite in the category.

Who I think should win: Chris O’Dowd for Of Mice and Men. While I would like and be thrilled to see Brian Cranston win I really think that Chris shined in this production. It’s not only a demanding and very well known role but he proved to everyone that he can do more than play the every so cute and endearing police officer from Bridesmaids.

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play

Who will win: Audra McDonald for Lady Day at Emersons Bar and Grille because she is Audra and she is playing Billie Holliday need I say more?

Who I think should win: Audra McDonald(see above) or Cherry Jones for The Glass Menagerie. Cherry Jones gave the performance of her career in the iconic role of Amanda Wingfield. She deserves it just as much as Audra.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical

Who will win: Neil Patrick Harris for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He is loved within the community and a favorite for Tony voters so it will be a surprise if he does not win.

Who I think should win: I would love to see Andy Karl for Rocky or Ramin Karimloo for Les Miserables win. Both actors have really gotten the chance to shine and show the rest of world what they can do. They’ve worked tirelessly to get here so I think it’s time for it to be acknowledged.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical

Who will win: Jessie Mueller for Beautiful or Kelli O’Hara for Bridges of Madison County. Both gave outstanding performances and have been the underdogs for ages. It seems like it could go wither way this year with these two veteran nominees.

Who I think should win: While I think that Kelli O’Hara definitely deserves a Tony, Idina Menzel for If/Then is my ultimate favorite. Yes, I am a big Idina fan and that role is a tough one to tackle. Her performance moved me and I would love to see If/Then get all the Tony love that it can get!

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play

Who will win: Mark Rylance for Twelfth Night. He was ah-mazing1

Who I think should win: Mark Rylance see above.

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play

Who will win: Celia Keenan-Bolger for The Glass Menagerie. She was amazing in the show. Her performance broke my heart and was so heart wrenching that it is finally her year to win!

Who I think should win: Celia Keenan-Bolger for The Glass Menagerie see above.

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical

Who will win: James Monroe Iglehart for Aladdin. He was funny, made an iconic role his own not to mention carried the whole show. Have I mentioned how much I love this show?!

Who I think should win: James Monroe Iglehart for Aladdin see above.

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical

Who will win: I think that it really comes down to Anika Larsen for Beautiful and Lena Hall for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. However, I do think that Anika has a slight edge over Lena it all comes down to what the voters think.

Who I think should win: Anika Larsen for Beautiful she has earned it!

Best Direction of a Musical

Who will win: It’s a toss up between Michael Mayer for Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Darko Tresnjak for A Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder. Both shows are favorites this with the voters and the community year so it’ll be interesting to see who’ll win.

Who I think should win: Michael Mayer for Hedwig and the Angry Inch or Darko Tresnjak for A Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder see above.

Best Direction of a Play

Who will win: Tim Carroll for Twelfth Night. Beautiful show all around and praised by the community, he’ll most likely take the prize.

Who I think should win: John Tiffany for The Glass Menagerie. The production was one of my favorite plays and so beautiful crafted and staged. I would love to see him win and spread the Menagerie love!

Best Choreography

Who will win: I’ve heard that Warren Carlyle’s chorography for After Midnight is wonderful and it looks like he has the win locked.

Who I think should win: Shocker I would love to see Aladdin win but Rocky also has some insane choreography that I feel it should be recognized.

Best Orchestrations

Who will win: Jason Robert Brown for Bridges of Madison County. The music is amazing and beautiful to listen to. Especially if he wins for Best Score, then he will most likely win here too.

Who I think should win: Jason Robert Brown for Bridges of Madison County see above.

The Tony’s air live on Sunday June 8th at 8pm on CBS! I’ll be live tweeting throughout the night as well as running a love blog on here. So follow me on twitter @bwaygirl828 for updates during the live ceremony and to join in on the conversation!

These Are A Few of My Favorite Tony Performances

I think that it is fair to say that the performances on each Tony telecast make the show. Besides the funny and often heartfelt acceptance speeches the performances really work to make the show. I often find myself watching past years performances on YouTube over the years some more so than others. So, here are my favorite Tony Awards performances!

Pippin-2013
Circus performers, acrobatics, a circus tent and Matthew James Thomas and Patina Miller all rolled into one 3-minute dazzling performance. I was watching it again and again the next day and have showed it to anybody who needs a show recommendation!

Bring It On!-2013
Catchy music and a stellar cast led in the number by the fantastic Adrienne Warren still has me watching and humming along to it a year later.

Beauty and the Beast-1993
My favorite Disney movie (and princess) growing up I think that it goes without saying that this is one of my favorites for obvious reasons.

Rent Reunion performance-2008
The original company of the cherished production reunited with the current cast at the time to commemorate the success of the show and of course sing. Six years later and it still gives me goose bumps!

Wicked-2004
One of my favorite shows and moments in musical theater of all time. Every time I watch Idina Menzel in this performance and just listen to Defying Gravity in general I get the chills up my spine when she flies-it’s one of those visceral moments in musical theater that is just amazing to watch or listen too!

Dreamgirls-1982
Jennifer Holliday owning this iconic song need I say more!

2009 Opening Number
A wonderful opening performance with each nominated best musical and musical revival getting a small segment with it all culminating with a big group performance of “Let the Sunshine In” led by the cast of Hair makes it easily one of my favorites. (Oh and the fact that it includes Aaron Tveit and Liza up in the front of the stage owning it)

2013 Opening Number

Okay, this one is probably hands down my favorite number ever. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius, Neil Patrick Harris is hysterical, it’s bright, filled with nominated shows, references (Les Mis close-up anyone) complete with a magic trick and a message to all the kids out there I mean come on it’s just spectacular!
