I think that it is fair to
say that the performances on each Tony telecast make the show. Besides the
funny and often heartfelt acceptance speeches the performances really work to
make the show. I often find myself watching past years performances on YouTube
over the years some more so than others. So, here are my favorite Tony Awards
performances!
Pippin-2013
Circus performers,
acrobatics, a circus tent and Matthew James Thomas and Patina Miller all rolled
into one 3-minute dazzling performance. I was watching it again and again the
next day and have showed it to anybody who needs a show recommendation!
Bring It On!-2013
Catchy music and a stellar
cast led in the number by the fantastic Adrienne Warren still has me watching and
humming along to it a year later.
Beauty and the Beast-1993
My favorite Disney movie (and
princess) growing up I think that it goes without saying that this is one of my
favorites for obvious reasons.
Rent Reunion performance-2008
The original company of the
cherished production reunited with the current cast at the time to commemorate
the success of the show and of course sing. Six years later and it still gives
me goose bumps!
Wicked-2004
One of my favorite shows and
moments in musical theater of all time. Every time I watch Idina Menzel in this
performance and just listen to Defying Gravity in general I get the chills up my
spine when she flies-it’s one of those visceral moments in musical theater that
is just amazing to watch or listen too!
Dreamgirls-1982
Jennifer Holliday owning this
iconic song need I say more!
2009 Opening Number
A wonderful opening
performance with each nominated best musical and musical revival getting a
small segment with it all culminating with a big group performance of “Let the
Sunshine In” led by the cast of Hair makes it easily one of my favorites. (Oh
and the fact that it includes Aaron Tveit and Liza up in the front of the stage
owning it)
2013 Opening Number
Okay, this one is probably
hands down my favorite number ever. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius, Neil
Patrick Harris is hysterical, it’s bright, filled with nominated shows, references
(Les Mis close-up anyone) complete with a magic trick and a message to all the
kids out there I mean come on it’s just spectacular!
