Like I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, January is usually a somber month on Broadway. With shows closing shortly after the holidays to make room for new shows. This year four have already been announced to close with probaly more to follow. Most closing shows close on the same day. This year it seems that January 2 will be the day that we say Adieu to a number of productions including West Side Story, Fela! and Promises,Promises. What baffles me is that the shows that are closing are ones that have done remarkably well in the box office. Now, lets keep in mind that not all closings have been announced yet, but out of the ones that have, I'm shocked. There are some shows that I think will close just by the numbers at success at the box office. Now there are a few productions that I feel are shoo-ins to stay open for a while:
Wicked:the show is a blockbuster and major money maker. People come from all over to see it and it always sells out every show.
Phantom of the Opera:it's the longest running show in Broadway history, plus it's a major tourist attraction.
Memphis:it won best musical this year and ticket sales have skyrocketed since the Tony's
Lion King:it's been running for over ten years and it's still going strong. The audience loves everything about this show and it's one of the most popular family productions.
Billy Elliot: It won best musical last year and it's still hard to get tickets!
Promises,Promises is closing due to departure of its leads Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth. The shows producers feel that the show will flounder once the two depart. It's a sad descision but the show will go out whil it's on top.
Until tomorrow fellow broadway geeks with the Glee review!
